St. Philip's School and Community Center

When the St. Philip's School required a new building to support their school and community outreach program, the construction committee reached out to th+a to create a master plan and craft the expansion. The final building provides a safe alternative recreation opportunity for children in this urban Dallas neighborhood, strengthening the school's ties to the local area and the Dallas community at large, from which many of its students are drawn.

Our team designed a new single-story classroom and gymnasium addition, positioning it so that the circulation of the new building connected seamlessly to the primary circulation of the existing building. By setting the new structure slightly away from the existing building, both new and existing portions maintained unrestricted natural lighting. We also designed a porte-cochere to provide a public entrance separate from the school itself, and included a tower element to signify its unique function apart from but supportive of the school program. The building exterior is brick veneer with a standing seam metal roof system consistent with the existing campus vernacular.

Working closely with the school's construction committee, th+a developed a cost-effective design which relied on a pre-engineered building frame and roof system to provide for the basic structure. The expansion houses six pre-kindergarten classrooms, three kindergarten classrooms, library, science room, music room and computer lab. A new gym, equipped with locker rooms, athletic office and gym equipment room, incorporates a cushioned wood athletic flooring system and accommodates two high school level basketball courts, eight retractable goals and telescoping bleacher seating 600. Community gatherings can be hosted in the 3,800 square foot Chapel and adjacent conference room.

Support spaces include dministrative offices, public toilet rooms, as well as age-specific classroom toilet rooms, and a vending area serving the gym. The interior features a select palette of colors in highly maintainable finishes such as seamless vinyl flooring, vinyl composition tile and painted drywall interior walls, with carpet in the chapel and auditorium space.
